The benefits of rugby, both increased personal fitness and greater team and local community spirit, are well known and have long been enjoyed by the senior men’s sections of the community. Recently there has been a phenomenal growth in mini rugby, played by boys and girls from 6 to 12 years, and in boys’ youth rugby (13-18 years). However girls in the same “youth” age range have largely been bypassed. Medway RFC seeks to focus efforts on bringing the sport to these women/girls in Medway.
Medway RFC is a community club with RFU Community Rugby Seal of Approval and the Sport England Clubmark scheme accreditation, run by local volunteers working together, using local council facilities to ensure this centre of excellence continues to offer Rugby to the community of Medway and beyond. Medway has enlisted the help of a current England Women’s rugby international who visits local youth clubs to run “academy sessions” for youth girls. Local schools have also been contacted.
The girls section has had numerous successes with girls being selected at U15 & U18 for County, Divisional and also the England Talent & Development Group. Other girls who have come through the Youth section have also gone on in senior Rugby and selected as County and England Academy players. England World Cup winner Rachael Burford started her playing career as part of Medway mini’s.
We wish to extend the out-reach to the community, both by hosting additional school & youth club sessions at new and existing partner schools/clubs and by bringing new players into the Medway RFC family. The U13/U15 and U18 girl’s train on Tuesday evenings 7pm – 9pm and with matches or more training on Sundays.
