East Grinstead 29 Medway 0

2 November 2008

Medway travelled away to East Grinstead on Sunday for a mentally and physically tough game.
Playing on a bog more than a pitch Medway went out to make an impact. However, within minutes of the start East Grinstead managed to get through Medway’s defence. Undeterred Medway fought back and defended. East Grinstead kept the pressure on. With players out of position Medway tried to adapt as much as possible, but East Grinstead pushed through again.

In the second half playing towards the sun Medway again tried to break down the East Grinstead defence. There were good runs and play from Medway but East Grinstead held them out. Medway never gave up even with some dubious tackling from East Grinstead; Medway kept their cool and continued to play. East Grinstead scored another three tries after surging through the back line and converting two of them increasing the lead to 29-0. Medway battled on to the final whistle, disappointed but not disheartened Medway will learn from the match and take it in their stride.

Final Score East Grinstead 29 Medway 0.

Special mentions to go to back of the match Charlotte Cooke and forward of the match Alison Smith on her debut for Medway who made quite an impact on the other team and a great impression on Medway!

Medway 20 Beccehamians 0

In less than perfect conditions Medway played host to Beccehamians on Sunday. From the start the pressure was on as Beccehamians pushed forward in to Medway’s half. Medway dealt with the pressure well and played a strong defensive half. Although Beccehamians kept trying to break through Medway stayed strong and denied them a try for the whole half. The score at half time 0-0.
As Medway took to the pitch for the second half, they piled on the pressure to break the deadlock and were rightly rewarded when Charlotte Cooke made a fantastic run down the pitch and scored the first try of the game, 5-0 to Medway. Beccehamians fought back and attempted to get through the defence again but were again denied, they did come close to scoring but the ball was held up and stopped them from scoring. Medway kept the pressure on with another two tries by Cooke and one by forward of the match Zena Abbott. Beccehamians didn’t give up and tried to get a try back but were held by Medway, in what was good defensive display.

Final score Medway 20 Beccehamians 0
Congratulations to Robyn Hackwell on being player of the match as well with good performance in her debut match for Medway.

Also special mentions for all team players that played out of position and to those in position who also played well.

Hastings & Bexhill 22 Medway 22

5 October 2008

Medway Ladies travelled to Hastings on Sunday to play against Hastings and Bexhill in their first league game this season. The terrible weather conditions did not help game play as driving wind and rain made it difficult conditions to play in. However Medway Ladies started the game well but conceded the first try as Hastings went in to the lead. They may have scored the first try but were unable to convert it giving Medway the chance to fight back, which they did with a great try by Kelly Dodd to bring the scores back even, unfortunately this try was not converted either leaving the score 5 –5 for the time being. After battling through the rain and wind Hastings broke through the defence to score again. Rather than be disheartened Medway played even harder and their efforts were rewarded with a fantastic run and try by captain Leanne Ogston. Half time score 10-10.

As the second half kicked off the rain eased off and gave a small reprieve to the players. Medway started the second half strong and went in to the lead with a try and conversion by Charlotte Cooke and a try by player of the match Gemma Duncan. As Hastings piled on the pressure the team pulled together to reduce the threat and managed to still gain valuable ground.

Hastings battled back and put the pressure on and the scores drew level. As the final whistle blew the score was 22-22.

There were a number of injuries for both teams and Hastings had to concede the match giving Medway the points; however in a show of good will Medway agreed the loan of a player and the game continued as a friendly.

Special mentions go out to Amie Milborrow and Ronell Stein for their enthusiasm and determination in playing their first competitive game for Medway. Congratulations!

For any ladies wanting to give rugby a try come along to a training session at 7:30pm on Tuesday evenings at Priestfields playing grounds. All players are welcome!
