London and South East U15 Divisional Selection

This season Medway RFC U15 Girls section has had a great result, although only having 6 regular players, all of these were selected for and played for Kent this season. They are Rebecca ‘Boo’ Wadhams, Rhiannon O’Kane, Lauren Price, Esme Conway, Taz Bricknell & Danielle McCann.

4 of the above players, Boo, Rhiannon, Taz and Esme, were then put forward to trial for London & South East England, which took place on Sunday 3rd February at Saracens new ground Allianz park.

3 of these 4 players, Boo, Rhiannon and Taz were successfully selected in to the London & South East England Girls Under 15’s squad and all were then selected to play in their first match vs the South West at Frome RFC Somerset on Sunday 17th February.  Taz was selected to start as Scrum Half and had the added bonus of being named Vice Captain.  Boo & Rhiannon were named as subs for Fly Half and Hooker, resepectively, a great acheivement for Rhiannon in her first ever season in the LSE set up and only her second season of actually playing rugby!

The London & South East U15 girls had a really tough game vs the South West at Frome RFC, winning by only 2 points at half time (12-10), but got stronger in the second half to push their win to 38-10 final score.  The Medway girls all performed brilliantly in the match, Taz Bricknell very almost scored, after stealing the ball and having a great run for the line, but was unfortunately held up by the oposition, just before the line! Boo Wadhams added points to the winning score, by converting one of the tries scored in the second half.  Rhiannon O’Kane really strengthened the scrum when she came on in the second half, helping to win a lot of ball and also had a few great break away runs.

The girls will now go on to attend training camps with the LSE squad and will play again in a Divisional tournament on the weekend of 23rd & 24th March at Hartpury Collage, where the squad will take on the SW again, the Midlands & the North and will also have the chance of being selected in to the England Talent Development Group, the next step in the RFU player development structure.

Following a successful U15 County Programme, where all the Medway U15 Girls, Esme Conway, Lauren Price, Boo Wadhams, Taz Bricknell, Rhiannon OKane  & Danielle McCann were selected for the Kent Team.

Esme, Boo, Taz and Rhiannon have all received invitations to go to the London South East Divisional Trials on 20th January at Northwood, Hertfordshire.

In addition the U18 Girls were all asked to represent County Rugby at three different counties, due to where the girls live and the cross county cluster with Essex of Rochford & Medway/Saracens (RaMS) all the U18 girls also played at County Level. Congratulations to Zahra Photay, Faye Baker & Mauwyno Graham (Kent), Sian Simpson, Hannah Barham & Kara Hepper (Essex) & Sharn Watson (Sussex).

Faye, Mauwyno, Kara & Sharn have also been invited to attend London South East Divisional Trials on 20th January at Northwood, Hertfordshire.

Congratulations goes out to all the girls of Medway for such a huge achievement in being selected to play County Rugby and to the girls requested to attend Divisional Trials all at Medway RFC wish them the best of luck, further news will be posted when the trial results are known.

Congratulations go to all the U15 & U18 girls.

All the girls from the two Medway teams have been selected to play County Rugby.

Medway Girls have been playing alongside Worthing during this season due to lack of numbers and have formed a very close bond, which resulted in the  U15 & U18 clustered teams both winning the St. George’s day Festival on 21st April and then the U15s winning the Kent 7’s on 29th April, with the U18s runners up.

On Sunday 6th May Medway Girls again joined with Worthing girls in both U15 & U18 for the prestigious Worthing 10s Festival, which is attended by many clubs from throughout England and Wales.

The U15s got to the semi-finals of the festival having played Cardiff Quinns, Ealing & Ellingham & Ringwood in their Pool and Aylesford Bulls in the Semi-final, they all showed great teamwork and professionalism in some very tough games on only their 3rd time as a clustered team and were commended on their sportsmanship.

The U18s having played a few games throughout the season with Worthing, were pitched in their pool against Solent Sirens/Ellingham Ringwood for their first game which they lost 5-14, this was their wake up call and they trained together in their break to go on to their second game against Oakmedians to win 24-14, this got them to the semi-final against Welwyn, a well practiced and drilled team, there was some tremendous defensive play by Worthing/Medway and they secured the win 5 – 0.  The final was against a cluster off SSB/London Irish, the girls had sustained some injuries which resulted in their forwards pack having to be totally replaced by inexperienced players, but they pulled together and secured the win 20 – 0.

Both age groups have achieved so much in this their first season and it is a promising start to Girl’s Rugby at Medway RFC.  More girls are needed so if you know somebody aged between 13 & 18 who you think would like to come and try please contact us.

On 19 February 2012 Taz Bricknell and Rebecca ‘Boo’ Wadhams made their London & South East Divisional debuts against the South West at Esher. London & South East won the game 52-17. Taz and Boo are just two of the girls who are currently thriving with the Girls section at Medway RFC.

Taz and Boo went on to represent London & South East again over the weekend of 30 March and 1 April 2012 in the Divisional Tournament. London & South East emerged victorious on points difference.

Congratulation girls – C’mon London & South East – C’mon Medway!
