In a match that will be remembered for its intensity and unpredictable conditions, Medway U16 girls secured a thrilling victory over BASS (Beckenham and Sidcup) U16 girls on the 24th of November. Despite the unusually warm but very windy day, Medway emerged victorious with a 45-27 win.
Medway opened the scoring with an impressive try from Amelia Massey right under the posts, which she skillfully converted herself. Caitlin Maw then finished off a slick backline move, taking a pass from Phoebe Elliot-Bloomfield to make it 12-0. However, playing into the wind soon took its toll—Coach Rich Warran lost his hat and tackle pads from a nearby pitch flew onto the field. BASS capitalized on these conditions, scoring three unanswered tries to bring the halftime score to 15-12 in their favour.
The second half saw BASS take the lead with a converted try, but Medway was not to be outdone. Madison Warran powered over the line, with Amelia adding the conversion to level the score. Shortly after, Seren Doran crossed the try line, putting Medway ahead 22-26. Phoebe Elliot-Bloomfield then capped off a brilliant run by Ruby Prenter, with Amelia adding the extras to extend the lead to 22-33.
BASS fought back, scoring another try to narrow the gap to 27-33. However, Medway's Caitlin Maw was relentless, scoring in the corner, and Seren Doran sealed the victory with a late try, bringing the final score to 27-45. It was a hard-fought, bonus point win for Medway.
Special recognition was given to Seren Doran, who was named forward of the match despite playing as a back, and to Amelia Massey, who was named back of the match. The coaches' player of the match award went to Summer, who had another standout performance at fly-half.
Medway’s resilience and teamwork were on full display, making this a memorable match for all involved.
